Signal expands encrypted group video calls to 40 people

Messaging App – Signal

Signal – a messaging app are now allowing 40 participants in group video chats and end-to-end encryption will still remain undamaged. Signal is best recognized for offering end-to-end encrypted messaging. That means only the members in the call can view the video or messages.

No one can view the calls, including the messaging provider or hackers, only if a participant accepts their request to add them into the video session.

Though, the developers behind the app began working on encrypted group video chats last year during the pandemic but still rolling it out last December.

Some of Signal’s rival messaging apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime supports 8 and 30 participants with end-to-end encrypted video calls at a time respectively.

Expanding the group video call function from five participants to 40 involved creating servers that can forward the video call to all participants without viewing or changing the data, The Signal Foundation explained.

The Foundation using the programming language to settle on writing the computer code for the server. The encryption keys made necessary to calls also continue to come from user devices, not from the servers.

When a member joins the call, it generates a key and sends it to all other members of the call. Whenever a member joins or leaves the call, each member in the call generates a new key and send it to all members.
