The Four Tafsir of Mujahida (Struggle)

Allama Alusi Syed Mahmood Baghdadi h says, “Mujahida” has four interpretations. Hazratwala h has explained it to us but because we have limited time, I will mention them briefly.

1-They prefer the command of Allah over their own desires

2-These people make effort to fulfil what Allah has made Farz, Wajib and Sunnat-e-Muakkidah. They are not like those who only pray Farz with takbeer-e-ula (first takbeer in salat) when they are in a pious environment and when they go home, people make fun of them that what kind of a student of religious knowledge is this that they do not pray Fajr or Asar. Instead they are seen at restaurants watching TV and movies. They also attend gatherings forbidden by deen and such as those gatherings that have singing and dancing going on. How will people inquire about deen from those who, with white beard attend gatherings of singing and dancing. We are not praying in congregation. When we are in pious environment, we become pious but when the environment is unfavorable, we lose our piousness.

3-They make an effort to spread the deen of Allah. My Shaykh said that go and have a look at any seminary. You will find teachers who have been teaching for the last forty or fifty years. They first memorized the Quran, then became
an A’alim, then did specialization and now they are serving the deen. He also said that look at the students (of these seminaries). They live in far off and travel just for learning the deen. Even if they would have been served (which they don’t) much tastier food at the seminary and they would get lesser tasty food at home, this food is better than whatever you get away from home (in path of Allah). Have a look at the tablighi jamaat. For spreading the deen of Allah, they go far and wide, on mountains and jungles, spending their own money, sometimes on foot, leaving the comfort of their homes behind. Have a look at the Khanqahs. People gather there from so many places just for the rectification of their inner self. And the Shaykh travels to different cities and villages (for spreading the deen) along with his disciples. If Allah has given talent to an A’alim or a Hafiz and he is satisfied with the little salary he gets, it is a great gift from Allah. There was a teacher in an Islamic seminary who was a wali of Allah. I came to know that he once went home for lunch and was very hungry. There were uncooked lentils at home and there weren’t any spices. He boiled the lentils and added some salt, ate them and went back to teaching.
