According to research and civil rights attorneys, harassing women and girls who wear the hijab is one of the most common types of bullying and harassment.
Bullying and harassment of Muslim schoolchildren were common before the pandemic, according to a new report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Massachusetts (CAIR-MA). Now that classes are back in person, cases are returning, following the pandemic's patterns.
During the time when students were participating in remote learning, there was virtually no reported school bullying. Adult Muslims who work from home saw a rise in harassment from their neighbors throughout the same time period.
According to Barbara Dougan legal director at CAIR-MA,
She claims that pulling a girl's hijab off her head is one of the most common forms of school bullying directed towards Muslim students. A popular taunt is to refer to a Muslim child as a terrorist.
