Girls jailed for taking off the hijab at an Iranian skateboarding event:

TEHRAN: According to state television, Iranian authorities arrested a number of young girls and several of the event's organisers after they failed to wear headscarves to a skateboarding event in the southern city of Shiraz.

Shiraz police chief Faraj Shojaee was quoted by the state news agency IRNA as saying that some girls "removed their hijab at the end of the sporting event without obeying the religious considerations and legal regulations."

A number of suspects and those connected to this gathering were recognized and arrested on Thursday with the help of the judiciary, he said.

On social media in Iran, a video allegedly portraying Tuesday's "Go Skateboarding Day" event quickly gained popularity.

Any mixed-sports or non-sports event cannot be held without adhering to religious and legal tenets, and those responsible will be held accountable.

Women are required to wear hijabs, which cover the head, neck, and hair, in accordance with Islamic law, which has been in effect in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
