Muslim women in Uganda say that they are forced to take off their veils.

KAMPALA :  Muslim women in Uganda complained in front of the legislature on Wednesday, claiming they were required to take off their veils in order to get services.

The women claimed that in addition to being required to take off their veils in order to be photographed at immigration offices, some schools also require female students to do so.

Aisha Kabanda, a female MP for the Butambala district, claimed that the Constitution permits people to follow their religions and that making Muslim women remove their clothing for a passport photo exposes areas of the body that shouldn't be visible.

Coercing Muslim women to expose themselves... restricts Muslim women the freedom to practise their religion. She stated that the measure represented discrimination against Muslim women and asked that it stop.

The matter was raised in a petition signed by Catholic nuns and Muslim women, according to Speaker Anita , who has asked Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to take appropriate action.

Nabbanja claimed that she has requested time from parliament so that she can write a report outlining possible solutions.
