In May 2022, the entire cost of generating power in the country increased by 131%, to Rs13.15 kWh, compared to Rs5.7 kWh in May previous year.
According to a report from brokerage house Ismail Iqbal Securities Limited, the increase is mostly due to an increase in the cost of generation for furnace oil (FO), Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), and coal, which increased by 135 percent, 178 percent, and 130 percent, respectively.
Electricity generation from coal fell by 23% YoY to 2,018 GWh, according to data on generation mix. With annual increases of 67 percent, 49 percent, and 93 percent, respectively, power generation from FO, nuclear, and wind is filling the gap.
Nuclear power generation has advanced significantly, accounting for 13% of total energy generation in May 2022, up from 10% in the same month in 2021.
Meanwhile, power generation increased by 13% year over year to 14,657 GWh in May 2022, up from 13,010 GWh in May 2021.
