KARACHI: Pakistan's mango production is anticipated to drop by roughly 50% this year, according to the head of a farmers' and exporters' organisation, as the crop has been severely harmed by abnormally high temperatures and water shortages.
After India, China, Thailand, and Indonesia, Pakistan is the world's fifth largest mango producer.
This month, Pakistan experienced a severe heat wave, with temperatures in the south exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). According to the government's Climate Change Ministry, the country went from winter to summer without experiencing a spring.
Pakistan's typical mango production is roughly 1.8 million tonnes, but experts expects it to be approximately half that this year, with the association's export aim reduced by 25,000 tonnes to 125,000 tonnes from last year.
More than a billion people are at risk from the region's heat, according to scientists, who attribute the region's early commencement of a harsh summer to climate change.
