Australia were frustrated on the final day of the second Test at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday as a resilient Pakistan snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat.
After two matches, the series still remains even but the result of the second Test must have felt a moral win for Pakistan, who at one point on the penultimate day were reeling at 21 for 2 in pursuit of a gargantuan 506-run target with a sea of overs left to survive.
After Pakistan resumed their innings at 192 for 2 earlier today, overnight batters Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique continued their partnership and survived the dangerous opening session. Shafique missed out on what would have been a battling ton, falling just four shorts before Fawad Alam perished for just nine.
The Aussies smelled blood but their hopes were dashed as Mohammad Rizwan and Babar stabilised the ship. Babar's marathon 196-run knock came to an end when he fell prey to Nathan Lyon and on the Aussie off spinner dismissed Faheem Ashraf as well on the very next ball.
At this point, Australians were odds-on favourites to run through the Pakistani tail and go one up in the series. However, under Rizwan's guidance, the hosts played out the remaining overs even though they did lose one more wicket during the process.
Australia are on their first tour of Pakistan since 1998, having previously refused to tour the country over security fears.
The third and final Test starts in Lahore on Monday.
