FIFA World Cup 2022: Islamic Traditions, Rules & Laws in Qatar

19 Nov 2022 By Know Muslim

Qatar will be the first Muslim country to host the FIFA World Cup 2022. The major tournament will begin from November 20. Over a million Football fans from all over the world will be travelling to Qatar for the World Cup in November and December to support their favorite team in the main event.

What do I need to enter Qatar for the World Cup?

Football fans will need to hold a Hayya Card - a form of fan ID - to enter the country from 1 November until 23 December. Even if you aren’t planning to attend any of the matches you’ll need one.

Match ticket holders can apply through the online portal and bring an additional three people who don’t have tickets. Once you have your Hayya Card you can use it for multiple entries to Qatar during the World Cup and you’ll be allowed to remain in the country until 23 January 2023.

The Hayya Card will also give you free access to public transport on days when there are matches including the bus, metro and tram.

Islamic Traditions in Qatar

However, the competition has faced major attention before a ball has even been kicked in the Middle East, with Qatar representing the first Arab state to host the tournament.

We’ve already seen the opening of Qatar’s World Cup stadiums with the recitation of Quran on different social media platforms.

Also Qatar has displayed murals containing hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in various locations across Doha, in preparation for the World Cup.

Laws & Rules in Qatar for World Cup visitors

Supporters will have to be cautious over rules on alcohol, sexual restrictions, COVID-19 quarantine and LGBTQ+ rights — all of which will be strictly imposed ahead of the big kickoff.

Advice surrounding fans travelling to Qatar has been clear from international governments, with specific guidance in place to highlight potential cultural and legal differences.

Official guidance from the US authorities, for example, provides fans following the USMNT with an overview of what to avoid in Qatar to prevent a potential law break, including firm advice on drug use, importing restricted products, alcohol drinking and dress code.

The Official Statement from Host Country authorities & FIFA about Alcoholic beverages:

The Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 will be the most expensive world cups in the history, costing the host 220 billion US dollars.
