A two-month-old infant and an elderly woman were rescued from the wreckage on Saturday, five days after an earthquake that killed more than 34,000 people and ravaged Turkey and Syria.

Even with the winter weather adding to the suffering of the millions who are now in urgent need of support, tens of thousands of local and foreign rescue personnel are still scouring through the destroyed neighbourhoods.

12,141 buildings were either completely destroyed or severely damaged, according to local officials.

A two-month-old infant was discovered alive in Antakya 128 hours after the earthquake, according to state news agency Anadolu.

Turkish media stated that among those saved five days after the earthquake were a two-year-old daughter, a lady who was six months pregnant, as well as a four-year-old and her father.

The Security Council has been urged by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to approve the establishment of new humanitarian supply crossing points between Turkey and Syria. The council will gather to talk about Syria, perhaps early the following week.
