LONDON: A British-Pakistani woman has been chosen to represent Higher Irlam and Peel Green as a councillor in Salford.

Oxford graduate Mishal Saeed, who contested on the Labour Party ticket, succeeded by 1,317 votes.

Local elections are a crucial chance for citizens to express their opinions on local issues and how they should be handled.

"It is an honour to have been elected for the post of Councillor, to serve my communities and to enhance my city," said Saeed, who participated in a number of Pakistani societies during her academic years.

At the University of Salford, where Mishal previously held the position of Student Union President, she organised TEDx events and won the Duke of Edinburgh's endorsement for her business operations.

"I was honoured to be chosen as the Labour Party candidate by the people in my district. The Labour Party has a remarkable record of changing people's lives; from establishing the NHS to enacting the minimum wage, they had a significant impact on people's lives all over the nation."

With all the issues the UK is dealing with, Saeed said the Labour Party is in a strong position to lead the country. She was glad to be a part of this movement and make a good change in people's lives by joining this cause. she said,

“These are the issues that matter to people. I will work hard to enhance the lives of residents.”
