Indian security chief Gen Bipin Rawat among 13 people killed in IAF chopper crash

Rawat said Indian media found 70-80% burns on his body; An IAF chopper with 14 on board crashed due to poor visibility

The occupants of the chopper, the Mi-17V5, included Rawat's wife, security secretary, security commander and pilots.

The chopper was traveling from Sulur in Coimbatore to Defense Services Staff College in Wellington where Rawat, along with Chief of Army Staff MM Naravane, were scheduled to take part in the event later.

Earlier, three passengers who were reportedly rescued were critically injured - some Indian media reported with 85 percent burns on their bodies - and were rushed to a hospital in Wellington cantonment in the Nilgiris region.

Meanwhile, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has reported to Cabinet and is expected to make a statement to Parliament on the incident tomorrow.

He will also go to Rawat's house to tell his family about the incident.

In addition, Indian Air Force officer Vivek Ram Chaudhuri was inspecting the scene of the accident.

"Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) staff Bipin Rawat and family members were boarding a Mi-series chopper when it crashed between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu" according to ANI news agency.

The Indian military chief was on his way to Defense Staff College in Wellington from the IAF campus in Sulur near Coimbatore.

Rawat is India's first CDS, a position the Indian government has established in 2019, and appears to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
