Israel Recalls Ambassador to South Africa Amidst Growing Tensions

21 Nov 2023 By Know Muslim

Israel recalled its ambassador to South Africa, Eliav Belotserkovsky, "for consultations." This move came ahead of a parliamentary vote in South Africa on whether to close the Israeli embassy in the country.

The decision to recall Belotserkovsky was made in response to "the latest statements from South Africa," which Israel's Foreign Ministry said were "unprecedented in their severity and unacceptable." The Foreign Ministry specifically cited statements by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who had said that Israel was committing "war crimes and genocide" in Gaza.

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has also been critical of Israel's actions in Gaza, and the party has said that it will support a parliamentary motion calling for the Israeli embassy to be closed.

The recall of the ambassador is a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries. Israel and South Africa have had diplomatic relations since 1994, but the relationship has been strained in recent years due to Israel's treatment of Palestinians.

It is unclear what the outcome of the parliamentary vote will be. However, the recall of the ambassador is a sign that Israel is taking South Africa's criticism seriously, and it could lead to further diplomatic repercussions.
