More than 800 mosques have been targeted in Germany. From 2014 to 2022

Berlin : Since 2014, threats and attacks have been made against more than 800 mosques in Germany, but most of these incidents, according to Brandeilig, an initiative of the rights organization FAIR International, were not thoroughly examined.

Between 2014 and 2022, the group—which established Germany's first reporting centre for mosque attacks—recorded roughly 840 incidents of attacks, damage, and threats.

An extensive investigation of the crimes in 2018 showed that majority of the attacks' perpetrators were unpunished, which encouraged left-wing extremists or neo-Nazis to carry out other attacks against Muslim worship locations.

The organisation stated in a recent research that the clearance rate for mosque attacks is generally very low.

Only nine of the 120 attacks on mosques that were reported in 2018 had perpetrators that could be identified.

Brandeilig's specialists emphasised that this rate is concerning, noting out that in at least 20 cases, including arson attacks, suspects intended to cause death or serious physical harm.

In general, police officers responded to the scene fairly swiftly and got to work on the investigation right away. However, to this day, nearly none of the incidents could be resolved, according to the specialists.

After France, Germany has the second-largest Muslim community in Western Europe, with a population of over 83 million. Three million of the country's 5.3 million Muslims are of Turkish origin.
