United States of America envoy meets Taliban government official for women's rights

On Saturday, the US special envoy to Afghanistan met with the Taliban's chief diplomat, emphasising global opposition to the group's treatment of women and girls.

Since regaining power last year, the Taliban have sanctioned a slew of limitations on civil society, many of which are focused at limiting the rights of women and girls.

Earlier this month, Afghanistan's supreme leader ordered women to cover their faces completely in public, preferably with the traditional burqa.

The two also discussed economic balance in Afghanistan and concerns over attacks on civilians.

The country is on the verge of economic disaster; after various nations froze Afghanistan's assets held abroad and cut off aid.
